Best Time of Day to Fish Tampa Bay
Ask ten Tampa Bay anglers when the best time to fish is and nine of them will say “dawn and dusk.” They’re not wrong, but it’s not that simple. Tide phase, moon position, time of year, and what you’re targeting all matter more than whether the sun is up.
I fish Tampa Bay year-round. from the Skyway piers to the mangrove edges of Fort De Soto to the grass flats of Egmont Key. Here’s what I’ve learned about timing the bite, backed by tide data, solunar tables, and a lot of casts.
The Short Answer
Moving tide at dawn or dusk is the best time to fish Tampa Bay, period. The hour before and after sunrise, and the hour before and after sunset, during an incoming or outgoing tide that overlaps those windows.
But if you’re reading this at noon on a Tuesday, don’t turn around. There’s a good time to fish every part of the day if you know what to look for.
Why Tide Matters More Than Sunlight
Tampa Bay is a shallow estuary. Most of the fish you’re targeting. snook, redfish, trout. are ambush predators that use tidal flow to feed. Moving water pushes baitfish, shrimp, and crabs through the passes, along the mangroves, and across the grass flats. Stationary water means the fish shut down.
| Tide Phase | Fishing Quality | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming (rising) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Best overall. Bait moves into the mangroves and flats, predators follow |
| Outgoing (falling) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Good. Bait gets funneled out of creeks and passes. Reds and trout stack up on the edges |
| High slack | ⭐⭐ | Fish are spread out and less active. Can still catch but work harder |
| Low slack | ⭐ | Minimal water movement. Fish are holding deep. Best time to retie and re-rig |
Incoming tide is king in Tampa Bay, especially the last two hours of the rise. That’s when snook cruise the mangrove shorelines, redfish tail on the flats, and trout sit on the edges waiting for bait to wash past.
From NOAA tide data at Gandy Bridge (Old Tampa Bay), a typical summer day shows:
- First light low or mid-rising: Excellent for shoreline fishing
- Mid-day high slack: Tough. Move to deeper structure or dock shadows
- Late afternoon outgoing into sunset: Second-best window of the day
Summer Hours (May–September)
Summer in Tampa Bay means heat, humidity, and midday sun that sends fish (and anglers) into the shade.
| Window | Rating | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30 AM – 8:30 AM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Best bite of the day. Moving tide + low light = aggressive fish |
| 8:30 AM – 11:00 AM | ⭐⭐⭐ | Still decent, especially on cloudy days or in shadowed shorelines |
| 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM | ⭐ | Brutal. Fish hold deep near structure. Only worth it from a pier or bridge |
| 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Second window opens as sun drops. Outgoing tide here is excellent |
| 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Sunset bite. Snook love low light. Topwater time |
| Night (after dark) | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ | Under dock lights and bridges. Snook and trout feed aggressively |
Sunrise in late June hits around 6:35 AM with sunset around 8:30 PM. By October, sunrise shifts to 7:30 AM and sunset to 7:00 PM, shifting these windows later.
The Solunar Factor
Solunar theory predicts fish activity based on the moon’s position. Major periods (when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot) can trigger 45–90 minutes of intense feeding. Minor periods (moonrise and moonset) produce shorter bursts.
For Tampa Bay:
- Major periods are roughly 45 minutes long and happen twice daily
- Minor periods are about 30 minutes and also happen twice daily
- Full moon and new moon amplify solunar activity by 20–30%
- A major period that falls within the dawn or dusk tide window is the best possible time to be on the water
You don’t need a dedicated app. NOAA tide charts + a basic solunar calendar for your zip code gives you everything you need. The free Tides4Fishing and TidesPro sites both include solunar overlays for Tampa Bay locations.
Species-Specific Timing
Snook
Snook are low-light predators. They’re most active between dusk and dawn, especially on an incoming tide. In summer, snook stack up under dock lights at night and in the shadows of bridges and mangroves during the day. The one-hour window after sunset on an outgoing tide is my personal favorite for snook on topwater.
Redfish
Redfish are less picky about light levels but very picky about tide. They tail on the flats during the last two hours of the incoming tide when the water is high enough to cover the grass. In summer, early morning flats fishing produces the best redfish action before the sun gets high.
Spotted Trout
Trout are daytime feeders compared to snook. They’ll bite through the middle of the day if there’s moving water, especially on grass flats in 3–5 feet. The new FWC regional management (effective April 2026) established nine management zones around the state. Tampa Bay is its own region. Check the current regulations before targeting trout, as slot limits and bag limits vary by zone.
Tarpon
Tarpon follow the tides and the bait. In Tampa Bay, the best tarpon fishing is at first light on a rising tide from May through July. They roll through the passes and along the beachfronts, often within casting range of the shore. By late July, most of the tarpon have moved on.
Seasonal Adjustments
| Season | Best Window | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM | Tarpon start showing. Water warms, fish feed hard |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 5:30 AM – 8:30 AM | Early morning is critical. Afternoons are dead |
| Fall (Sep–Nov) | 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM | Fish feed later as water cools. Mullet run adds activity |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Fish move deep and slow. Midday warmth triggers the bite |
Can You Fish Midday in Tampa Bay?
Yes, but you need to adjust. In summer, the heat pushes fish into deeper holes, under docks, and under bridges. You’re not going to sight-fish redfish on the flats at 2 PM in July. But you can still catch:
- From a pier or bridge: The Skyway and Sunshine Skyway piers produce at all hours because the deep water and structure hold fish
- In deep passes: Bunces Pass, Southwest Channel, and Egmont Channel hold fish at depth even at midday
- Under dock lights: At night during summer, snook and trout stack under lighted docks in residential canals
Bottom Line
Best time: Dawn + incoming tide = unbeatable.
Second best: Sunset + outgoing tide = close second.
Worst time: Low slack at 2 PM in August. Don’t bother.
Always worth it: Any moving water at dawn or dusk, regardless of season.
The tide chart at Gandy Bridge (NOAA station 8726641) is a solid reference for most of Old Tampa Bay. For the southern parts of the bay (Egmont Key, Anna Maria), check the St. Petersburg or Sunshine Skyway tide stations instead.
Tight lines.
