Honeymoon Island Fishing Guide

I fish Tampa Bay a lot. Honeymoon Island is one of the places I keep coming back to. Surf, pass water, grass flats. No big offshore run required.

It sits at the end of Causeway Blvd in Dunedin. Sand and shallow water. Real fish.

I am working from Florida State Parks and FWC, not fishing-forum folklore. If I have not ground a stretch myself enough to talk from memory, I will tell you.

Why Honeymoon

You get a few looks in one stop. Designated surf and pass. Hurricane Pass and the south end. St. Joseph Sound grass flats if you want to push out.

The park map tags Hurricane Pass and the south end for snook, trout, redfish, pompano, and shark. That is where my head goes first when someone asks about structure and current. Map says it. I have not logged every tide there, so I am not selling a guarantee.

Kayaks go through the park concession and Pelican Cove. Outside the gate, Dunedin Causeway has free parking and its own hours.

One clear thing: official park pages do not list a fishing pier inside Honeymoon. If a blog says there is one, I am not repeating it.

Getting there, hours, and fees

Address is #1 Causeway Blvd., Dunedin, FL 34698. Park phone is 727-241-6106.

Take US 19 to SR 586 / Curlew Road. Head west about five miles. You will hit the park.

Gate runs 8 a.m. to sundown, every day.

Fees from Florida State Parks:

• $8 a vehicle, up to eight people
• $4 if you are solo in the car
• $2 if you walk, bike, or are an extra passenger
• $4 sunset fee starting an hour before close

Annual pass dollars? I am skipping those. They move. Call the park or hit the fees page if you want a pass. Same with cards at the booth. Ask when you pull up.

Where to fish

South end and Hurricane Pass

This is the stretch with current and structure on the map. Snook, trout, redfish, pompano, shark. Good September conversation because snook harvest is back open.

Show up, read the water, do not treat a map icon like a fish finder.

Surf and designated shore areas

You can fish surf and pass water in the designated spots. Watch the beach flags. Watch nesting signs and temporary fencing. Nobody is lifeguarding you out here.

Kayak and Pelican Cove

Want grass flats in St. Joseph Sound without trailering? This is the easy on-ramp. Concession is on site. What they rent and what it costs changes. Call before you drive out counting on a kayak.

Dunedin Causeway outside the gate

Gate closed, or you just want free parking? Fish the Causeway. City says recreation 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. After-hours fishing needs a permit from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office North District. Number is 727-582-6900.

Motorized launch west of the drawbridge was temporarily closed last I checked. Temporary until further notice. Confirm before you trailer.

Licenses and permits

You need to be square with FWC. License numbers I am working from:

• Florida resident annual saltwater: $17
• Nonresident annual: $47
• 3-day: $17
• 7-day: $30
• Resident shoreline-only: free, but shore or affixed structure only
• Snook permit: $10 a year if you keep snook
• Shore-based shark permit: free after the education course if you are 16 or older

What you can catch

Park list includes flounder, snook, trout, redfish, snapper, whiting, sheepshead, pompano, Spanish mackerel, cobia, ladyfish, and tarpon. That is a menu, not a daily specials board.

Regs move. Pull MyFWC and eRegulations before you put anything on ice. Here is the September snapshot I am using.

Snook

Harvest reopens September 1 after the May 1 to August 31 shutdown. Another closure runs December 1 through the end of February. Slot is 28 to 33 inches total length. Bag is one. You need the snook permit. Hurricane Pass and the south end are where the park map puts snook. That is why September matters here.

Redfish

Slot 18 to 27 inches. One per person, two per vessel. Year-round under those limits.

Spotted seatrout

Slot 15 to 19 inches. Bag of three, with the one-over-slot rule for 2026. Check FWC for the regional notes before you keep fish.

Pompano

Eleven inches fork. Bag of six.

Spanish mackerel

Twelve inches fork. Bag of fifteen. Year-round.

Flounder

Fourteen inches. Bag of five. Closed October 15 to November 30.

Sheepshead

Twelve inches. Bag of eight.

The rest of the park list

Cobia, snapper, whiting, ladyfish, shark, tarpon. I am not guessing size and bag on those. Grab FWC species pages and the July 2026 coastal eRegs before you keep any.

Rules worth respecting

Sandspit temporary cut has been in place since April 9, 2024. Florida State Parks says do not enter or cross. Deep water. Bad current. Call the park if you want anything newer than that notice.

Shorebird nesting can shut beaches. Obey the signs.

Watch the flags. No lifeguards.

Practical stuff

Tides: NOAA Clearwater Beach station 8726724. There is no magic tide that always loads fish.

Kayak: concession is there. Call for rates and availability.

Before you leave the house, check park hours and fees, the sandspit notice, Causeway launch status, and FWC. Temporary closures move.

Honeymoon is a working shoreline fishery. Treat the map, the fees, and FWC like the truth. Pack light. Watch the flags. Call the park if something looks off when you roll up.
